Will be back momentarily. Testing something in the meantime

I am in the midst of doing quite a bit @ work, so I have neglected my personal blog, but rest assured I will be back soon enough to get back to it.

In the meantime:

– Been smoking up to half-a-pack/day again. I know my bad. Will table that issue for now.
– 20 year reunion next month: INSANE
– Miss people in my life: You know who you are, and I love you.

In the meantime, here’s a old picture of me from 4 years ago when i went to Alaska w/ my brother Jim. It ruled!

May 9, 2009: It’s been a long week…

– besides work (which btw I actually like my job contrary to what people have been asking me), I’ve only hit the gym on Wednesday and Thursday.  I didn’t want to push it because of the massive cramping I’ve been experiencing on my legs.  I finally got a muscle relaxer and a stern look dashed in my direction with the following words: “Drink Gatorade for electrolyte replenishment.”  Ever since I had some, no more cramping.  Yeah, crazy, huh?  I swore off any sports drinks for over 2 years due to being addicted to Gatorade (I used to drink @ least a 64 oz/day) and it was getting ridiculous when I discovered the 1 gallon size.  By then I knew I had a problem:

OK More than a gallon of gatorade, but you know what I mean!

OK More than a gallon of gatorade, but you know what I mean!

– I’ve been averaging anywhere from 3 cigarettes (Thursday) to 6 1/2 (Tuesday).  So far today I’ve only had 1, but it’s not even 10AM on a Saturday morning…the day’s going to be long…I can feel it!  I just have to keep weening myself off of it.  It’s a long road…

My brand of choice: Camel Turkish Silvers

when I buy smokes, I buy the brand above, but mind you I also have a cigarette roller machine.  I own the Tops Top-O-Matic:

and I still have a good stash of the following tobaccos:

Bugler Gold Blend Tobacco

Zig Zag Light Tobacco

– Yeah, I know…no good, but it’s not like I’m sitting there rolling smoke after smoke.  If I get a major craving, I just roll one:  I don’t want to make multiple smokes in the event I get tempted to chain-smoke 2-3 of them…no good!

– Saw this movie last night:

Star Trek XI

Star Trek XI

It wasn’t just the movie, it was the company:  My closest friend El…what can I say?  Her family rules like none other…

Huh…got that all taken care of and not eve 10AM yet…like I said…long day.

As far as food pictures, I’ve got a boatload taken from this week, but unfortunately I’m in Rockland and I forgot my extension (xd card)…on my dad’s computer.  I’ll do it next post!

Diet and Exercise Recap: May 3, 2009

Exercise (if you can call it that…been taking it easy due to the sore left shin/calf and sore right hamstring):

– a slow, paced walk for an hour in the AM

– 20 minutes on the exercise bike

– 10 minutes on the stair master

– a slow, paced walk in the evening after dinner (about 15-20 minutes)

What I ate:

Honey Nut Chex

Take-Out Chinese: - Crab Rangoons - Shrimp Toast - House Special Soup - Vegetable Fried Rice - White Rice - Sesame Chicken - Steamed Dumplings

– mind you, I didn’t eat everything from the dinner picture, but it was easier to just take a picture of everything that came in prior to eating.  It was everything my brother and I ordered (minus his sesame chicken)…

– I also had a cobb salad for lunch, but since I actually forgot to take a picture of it beforehand, it kinda looked like this (not the actual salad, but close):

Cobb Salad

– in other news, I spent the evening kicked back after I got back from my “digest” walk.  Monday was a pretty crazy day with a lot to do @ work, so it was a good thing I got in some rest…

Diet and Exercise Recap: May 2, 2009

– Went for a walk to the gym after I wrote yesterday’s post and did the following:

  1. 10 minutes warm-up on the exercise bike
  2. 20 minutes on the treadmill with arm extension @ 3mph, then 3.4mph after 10 minutes
  3. 10 minutes on the stair master (Level 2 for 5 minutes, then Level 3 for 5 minutes) – I couldn’t go further than 10 minutes due to my left leg cramping up

– After I rubbed down my leg again, I got good advice and purchased the following:

Hylands Leg Cramps With Quinine Caplets

Hyland's Leg Cramps With Quinine Caplets

– since I started to take them, I only had 1 leg cramp (both legs), but after I got over that, no cramps!  I hope this does it combined with additional fluids (making sure I drink 3 liters of water minimum) as a precaution as well.

– went to New Paltz as I took one of my random drives along w/ my brother.  The town’s pretty hopping surprisingly:  Lots of places to hang out…especially their strip of local stores (looks like downtown Nyack a bit, but instead of a straight road, it’s a question marked-shaped road).  Got home just past 9PM and had some chicken while I watched Fight Club…can never get sick of that movie!

– Oh yeah, looking forward to Kinetik in 2 weeks:

P.S. – below is what I ate predominantly.  I did have some Doritos while I was driving, but I didn’t take a picture of that…

Diet and Exercise Recap: May 1, 2009

– walked about 30 minutes before work (no muscle spasms)

– before going out to lunch, I walked around the plaza, but this time I did get a muscle cramp (right hamstring).  I’m seeing the doctor next week for a 2nd follow-up after my hospitalization, so if these series of muscle spasms continue I hope he can prescribe some treatment to elliviate this pain.  I thought it was dehydration so I almost doubled my water consumption since Wednesday.  Unfortunately when all is said and done, Icy Hot to the rescue!

– It was Friday and when I left I called up my brother to see if he wanted to stay in and we’ll cook something or go out.  He opted to go out:  I opted to drive just over an hour north to Albany and hit The Golden Corral.  Good for the meal:  Bad for me!

– We got back around 11PM and there were still people @ the gym.  I went in, put on my sweats, and headed on over.  After stretching out my legs for a good 15 minutes, I hit the treadmill for 30 minutes going around 3.0 miles to start, then half-way through I moved it up to 3.4.  After that, I grabbed the smallest set of dumbbells I saw (15lbs) and did the following:

  1. Dumbbell Flat-Chest Presses:  2 sets of 10 reps
  2. Shoulders:  2 sets of 5 reps
  3. Reverse Flies – 2 sets of 5 reps
  4. Shrugs:  2 sets of 10 reps
  5. Bicep curls:  2 sets of 10 reps
  6. Triceps curls:  2 sets of 5 reps

After I got back, I showered, put on PJs, and went to bed only to be woken up with muscle spasms on my left calf/shin.  On a bright note:  At least I’m trying…

…but still I’m aching all over the place…and in pain on my calf.  Damn leg! 😦

Diet and Exercise Recap: April 30, 2009

Well, it started last night when I woke up with that massive muscle spasm:  I ate a red banana.  When I woke up, I stretched, then took an early AM casual walk for about 15-20 minutes.  Got back, showered, then headed out to work.  I had to stay late, but when I got back home, my brother had just gotten back from Rockland with a few slices of pizza from Peppe’s Pizza and some KFC grilled chicken.  I had the slice, then went out to the gym and did 20 minutes on the cycle followed by 10 minutes on the stairmaster.  No treadmill since there were people on it, so I left, took another quick shower, then had the KFC.  It was surprisingly good!  I then stretched out some more, watched Smallville, then something on this show I had on my DVR called Dhani Tackles The Globe.  The episode was from his trip to Australia and trying to be a surf-and-rescue swimmer. I have NOTHING to complain about after seeing the physical activity this guy had to endure during that episode…damn!

Anyway, I’m still just trying to get into some kind of rhythm.  Yeah, I’ve had a few compromising meals this week, but I’m only human.  Tomorrow’s another day.  I’d say I was excited that it was Friday, but believe it or not I get more excited when I get up Saturday, so I’ll leave it for then.

In unrelated news, I’m hope that I’ll be able to get to this year’s Kinetik Festival.  I missed it last year and I’ve been regretting it ever since.  The chances of it happening were cut down a bit due to my stay @ the hospital a few weeks ago, but I have high hopes that things will fall into place and I can make it happen.  There’s a slew of people I’d like to hang out with there, so we’ll see what happens with regards to that.

So, to recap:

– AM walk, 20 minutes cycle, 10 minutes stairmaster

– Cigarettes:  1 on my way to work, 2 while I was at work, 1/2 after I got home, and in all likelihood I’m going to have one before I brush my teeth and crash, so let’s say I had 5 today.  I know, that’s 5 too many cigarettes:  *shrugs*

Diet and Exercise Recap: April 29, 2009

What did I do today:

– Stretched out for 10-15 minutes prior to work.  Didn’t exercise at all due to pulling muscles on both legs (shin and calf on left leg; hamstring on right)

– Worked a bit late today to finish a big work task

– Missed going to Smoker’s Anonymous Meeting in New Paltz since it was @ 7PM.

– Cigarette Count:  1/2 in the AM, 1 in the afternoon, 2 in the evening = 4 1/2 total

What I ate:

Multi-Grain Cereal w/ Berries and a banana

Homemade Peanut Brittle (from Kingston Wok Restaurant when I ordered out last week)

– I started out my day eating good, but (no excuse of course) when I got home, my brother already had the tater tots out of the oven and the Italian sausage in.  Even though I really should of not had a beer (due to the meds I’m still taking stemming from my hospital stay), I decided that one wasn’t going to kill me.

– Note to self:  Eat a bit more sensibly tomorrow

– Why am I up @ 3:35AM?  Went to bed before 11PM, but woke up to another muscle cramp about an hour ago and decided to update this while I was up anyway (as I rub more Icy Hot into my right hamstring)…

Cya tomorrow – R

  2. 10 minutes:  Treadmill w/ Arms – 2 incline hill
  3. Between 12-13 minutes:  Exercise Bike (it was about this time that my hamstring went nuts, so rolled off the bike and laid on the ground grimacing in pain while my brother helped put on some Icy Hot on it)
– stopped by Stewart’s, picked up 2 bucks worth of “regressive tax” for tonight’s drawing (Hey, you never know!), then picked up one of these to ease the pain I previously endured for 15 minutes:
Whatchamacallit Bar

– After dinner, I laid back until my leg acted up on me again.  I wound up standing and massaging my left shin/calf for an additional 15 minutes to make sure it just goes away.  I then ate a banana (forgot to take picture of that one)
I gotta get some zzz’s:  Big day @ work tomorrow…Cheers –

Love is THE answer – every day of the year

I’m starting this blog with an article I read not too long after I got out of the hospital.  It puts things into perspective and I have to say:  Many of us really take for granted what we already have…

How do you face cancer, death, a bad childhood, horrible things people do to you, natural disasters, or a bad economy?  This article offers some answers.

Today, I diagnosed metastatic cancer in a new patient who had just come to see me. I had to tell this young, beautiful, vibrant woman that did not not have long to live, perhaps a few months. There was nothing I could do for her. All I could do was to tell her that I cared for her. I could show her my professional “love.” My consultation report was faxed to the patient’s referring primary physician, and an hour later, the physician called me, in disbelief. Together on the phone, we could only share a sense of profound loss. You might read this and think: Love is useless in this case. Love will not cure her cancer, nor will love protect her from the pain and suffering that is imminent. And you would be absolutely correct. But what is the alternative to love? Is it hate? Is it apathy? When I was younger, I used to consider that only actions and accomplishments are truly useful. You can list them, objectively and concretely. You can measure productivity and compare the results to other people’s activities. But when there is no useful action, as in this case, is there nothing left but despair? When someone hurts you, is there nothing to do but retaliate? Medically, it has been shown that hate hurts you physically just as much, if not more, than the person you hate. Scientifically, it has been shown that despair pains you mentally just as much, if not more, than actual bodily trauma. So, should you choose “love”, because it is the lesser of two evils? Well, I certainly do not think so. As I get older and accumulate more knowledge and experience, I realize more how little control I have over life in general. Maybe you did not have a good childhood, perhaps people have done horrible things to you, natural disasters occur, and now you are helpless. Please realize that the only thing you have under your control is how you feel and how you will react to external events. Unless you have a psychiatric illnessArticle Search, you can choose to “love” or you can choose to “hate.” None of us lives forever. Do you want to wait until you’re lying on your deathbed before you think “maybe I should have been nicer to this person or to that person?” Or do you want to evaluate every day of your life whether you have contributed in some way some love to the world that day? I offer you my humble opinion that “Love is THE answer – every day of the year!”
